We’ve accepted 27 people into the workshop setting a new record for early applications. That leaves about 15 openings.

We are pleased to announce the three guest instructors for the 2019 workshop:

Brooke Borel, a freelance journalist and author, whose articles appear in Popular Science, the Atlantic, the Guardian, Buzzfeed News, and many other publications.

Denise Grady, a reporter for the science news department of The New York Times for 20 years and winner of the Victor Cohn Prize for Excellence in Medical Science Reporting.

Steve Paulson, Executive Producer and interviewer for the nationally syndicated public radio show “To The Best Of Our Knowledge and a contributor to Salon, Nautilus, Slate, the Huffington Post and The Atlantic.

We will also be joined by Anne Strainchamps, host and co-counder of “To The Best Of Our Knowledge” and David Corcoran, former editor of Science Times and senior editor of Undark.

The workshop was founded and is directed by George Johnson and Sandra Blakeslee.

We’re in the midst of choosing instructors for the next workshop, May 6 to May 11, 2019. Please stay tuned. We will begin taking applications soon.

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful workshop. And apologies to those we had to put on the waiting list. Each year we get more applications, and they arrive earlier. We were full by late January and had a waiting list of 15 people (all of whom we hope will join us next year). The 2019 workshop will be the week of May 6. We will post details and begin taking applications this fall. Before then we are happy to answer any questions.

We wish everyone from 2018 a good summer and hope some of you will stay in touch.

We’re looking forward to meeting you next Monday evening. Please keep an eye on the weather report. Evenings are cool here at 7,000 feet. There is always the chance of a thunderstorm, but these are usually short and mild (and disturbingly rare of late).

Before you arrive, please take another look at the schedule and keep watching the Latest Updates. Some of the instructors may be posting suggested readings for their talks.

A few words on logistics:

1. About a dozen of you said you will have cars. There is a parking garage at the hotel for guests. If you’re not staying there, you’ll need to get a free parking pass. Ask Sandy or me on Monday afternoon when you register. Sometimes parking is tight in the morning when the other guests have not departed for the day. If you have any trouble finding a spot you can park temporarily at a meter or in the municipal parking lot a block from the hotel (Water Street between Galisteo and Old Santa Fe Trail). This has rarely been a problem though.

On Tuesday morning we will all meet in the hotel lobby (including commuters) and carpool to the Santa Fe Institute, which is about 10 minutes away. If you have a car and are willing to drive, please make yourself known (wave keys in air, etc.) and when you have a full load please head to the destination. Driving directions will be in your registration packet. We’ll give you more details when we meet Monday evening and will answer any questions.

2. On Thursday evening we will have dinner at Pranzo Italian Grill. The food and soft drinks are covered by us. The restaurant will charge us $15 extra for each person drinking wine with their meal (they call this an open pour, which apparently means that for two hours during dinner they will refill glasses). If you prefer beer or cocktails you can buy drinks individually at the restaurant.

If you will have a guest for the Thursday dinner and Friday barbecue, please be sure to pay the $55 guest fee, also at http://sciwrite.org/payment.html or by check or cash during the workshop.
