December 21, 2022 update

We have delayed the collecting of tuition payments while we watched to see how the covid situation developed. Though there is still much uncertainty we are confident enough to move ahead.

To secure your position in the May workshop please pay your tuition by January 31 by going to our payment page: http://sciwrite.org/payment.html. Let us know if you have any questions, but first please review our payment instructions, http://sciwrite.org/sciwrite.payment.html, and the FAQ, http://sciwrite.org/sciwrite.faq.html.

Speaking of covid, we are assuming that all participants will arrive fully vaccinated and boosted and will comply with whatever requirements have been put in place by the state health department and by Inn of the Governors, the Santa Fe Institute, and any other venues that we visit.

Fingers crossed. We look forward to seeing you in May.

November 2, 2021 update

We have responded to all applications on hand leaving just a few openings for next May. If you applied but haven’t heard from us, please let us know so we can correct our mistake.

Stay tuned for more updates in the weeks and months to come.

The 2020 workshop

Dear students,

We just learned that the Santa Fe Institute, where we usually spend the first full day of the workshop, is extending its moratorium on visitors and will not be able to accommodate us in November. Since the spirit of the workshop depends on this and other gatherings — the group dinners, the barbecue, the hike at Bandelier — it is becoming hard to envision pulling this all off. It is not even clear whether we would be able to hold the seminars themselves. We’re sad to have to cancel for the first time in 25 years.

In the coming days all the costs you have paid will be refunded. We will reverse credit card charges or mail checks to the address you gave on your application. (Let us know if you need to make any changes.) Those with reservations at Inn of the Governors will be contacted directly by the hotel to cancel their bookings.

We will try to hold a workshop next May and will post updates on the website.

Many thanks for your understanding. We will miss you all.

updated November 8, 2020: As uncertainty continues to prevail, a May 2021 workshop no longer seems possible. We will try for next fall or the following spring.

March 17, 2020 update

Dear students,

We hope you all are well and hanging in there.

The Centers for Disease Control has now asked that for the next eight weeks gatherings of 50 or more people be postponed. (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/large-events/mass-gatherings-ready-for-covid-19.html)

With 45 students and five instructors, we fit that description. We have talked to the hotel and can offer two alternatives: rescheduling the workshop for November 9-14 (nothing earlier in the fall was available) or waiting until next year, May 3-8, 2021. We are planning to have the same instructors though that can’t be guaranteed. In any case you can expect the usual lineup drawn from the top people in our profession.

Please help us decide. If enough of you can attend we will move ahead with a November workshop. Otherwise we will wait until next May.

We have sent everyone an email with a link that will connect you to a survey form with a single question and three options. Please respond as soon as you can. We will inform you of the results when the votes are in.

Hoping to see you this fall or next spring.

March 9, 2020 update

With 11 weeks still to go before the workshop, we are closely watching the news about the new coronavirus and remain optimistic that the meeting will go ahead as planned. In the unlikely event that we have to cancel we will, of course, refund all fees that have been paid.

We have been fully booked since mid January and still have a waiting list of 15 people.

Please let us know if you have any questions.
